The Sci Guys: Science at Home - Slowing Chemical Reactions Experiment - Glow Sticks in Liquid Nitrogen
Welcome to science at home in this experiment we will be slowing chemical reactions by placing glow sticks into liquid nitrogen. A chemical reactions occurs when two substances are mixed together and new substances are creation through the breaking and forming of chemical bonds. The glow sticks in our experiment produce light through a chemical reaction which only requires the heat from the environment to occur.

When a chemical reaction like in our glow sticks is cooled, like when we place the glow sticks into liquid nitrogen, the temperature drops and the molecules eventually slow. Slowing the molecules also slows down the collision of molecules that produce the chemical reaction which causes the glow stick to glow, dimming the glow stick. When the glow stick is warmed again, the molecules begin to collide again, the chemical reaction restarts and the glow will return.
